Tourism Committee

The Tourism Committee, comprised of local tourism industry segment partners, advises the planning and management of the Chamber's destination marketing strategies to increase overnight visitation and maximize tourism-based economic impact and development.

Chair: Dennis Hoover, Mountain Laurel Creek Inn & Spa

Meetings: The Tourism Committee meets every other month on the 2nd Wednesday at 12:00pm in the Chamber conference room.

2016 Action Items

  • Promote packages and itineraries to target identified interest segments
  • Engage the services and direct the resources of professional public relations firm focused on target market interest segments
  • Host FAM Trips and Travel Writers
  • Implement strategic, state-wide distribution plan for print materials
  • Enhance website content and navigation to improve the virtual visitor experience, including comprehensive event planning, group meetings, blog, media page, and wedding information
  • Market “Dahlonega: Civil War Soldiers & Gold Miners” app and "North Georgia Waterfalls" app
  • Market and promote seasonal festivals and events
  • Develop a 3-year marketing plan
  • Host a food FAM tour at restaurants that are also music venues
  • Continue to build portfolio of hi-res images
  • Continue to develop resource guides and manage print collateral inventory
  • Develop an agritourism trail itinerary
  • Continue to pursue AVA designation
  • Explore trademarking “Heart of Georgia Wine Country”
  • Create new packages and itineraries with partners and attractions (specifically music and culinary itinerary)
  • Analyze current community-wide directional, gateway, and wayfinding signage
  • Work with community partners to explore enhanced parking options for visitors
  • Offer support for merchant extended shopping hours campaign
  • Work on the long-term goal of obtaining designation as a Bike Friendly Community by installing bicycle racks downtown, creating up-to-date community bicycling maps, and hosting a Bike Safety Rodeo for children during Six Gap
  • Partner to secure historical markers for local points of interest
  • Engage with UNG on enhancing tourism infrastructure, events, marketing and promotions
  • Research the millenial market and identify current trends in order to develop strategies to attract this large and growing demographic
  • Enhance the visitor experience in the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Visitors Center through activities and events
  • Coordinate destination marketing efforts with the Lumpkin County Development Authority and Dahlonega Downtown Development Authority
  • Analyze and utilize all available marketing tools offered by Georgia Department of Economic Development Tourism Division and assistance of Northeast Mountains Regional Rep
  • Participate in co-op advertising programs with Northeast Georgia Mountains Travel Association and Hospitality Highway partnerships
  • Host periodic forums with lodging partners for networking, communications, educational opportunities, and maintaining status of current accommodations
  • Develop a system to better serve as the county Camera Ready Liaison to facilitate Georgia Film Industry opportunities
  • Provide software for group sales management and tracking
  • Provide resource materials for groups (i.e.: bags, print materials, Golden Ticket, banners, etc.)
  • Represent Dahlonega-Lumpkin County at regional and Southeastern tourism industry trade shows
  • Host a familiarization tour with wedding planners from the Atlanta market
  • Host a FAM tour with tour operators
  • Update group sales kit
  • Track group surveys and feedback
  • Promote new City motor coach parking

-          Utilize a balanced media mix to market and promote Dahlonega-Lumpkin County as a regional “hub” for North Georgia travel to our primary target markets and interest segments (Outdoor Adventure, Wine Enthusiasts, Arts & Culture, History & Heritage, Agri-tourism).

o   Promote packages and itineraries to target identified interest segments
