Opportunities for higher education abound with the presence of North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega as well as nearby Gainesville State College and Lanier Technical College. Lumpkin County’s proximity to Atlanta, only an hour’s drive away, also ensures that a multitude of higher education programs are accessible to Lumpkin County students.

 

Lumpkin County Board of Education

Newcomers are encouraged to contact the Lumpkin County School Board administrative office for information on registration for new students. By law, children must be 5 years old on or before September 1 to enter kindergarten and 6 years old on or before September 1 to enter the first grade.

Documents required to register include a certified birth certificate, immunization records on Georgia state forms, vision, hearing and dental screening records from a family doctor or local health clinic, a Social Security card, proof of residency in the school attendance zone and the previous year’s report card if transferring from another school. Our students’ dedication to success is strengthened by the partnership of educators, parents, business leaders and the community as a whole, all of whom actively participate in the educational process. More than 70 percent of Lumpkin County students continue on to seek higher learning after high school graduation – a rate that exceeds the state average by several points.

ClassroomLumpkin County students currently attend three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Lumpkin County High School offers several advanced placement courses for college-bound students. For students who may require additional assistance, after-school tutoring is available at the three elementary schools and the middle school. Other programs available include gifted, vocational labs, alternative programs, special education, English to Speakers of Other Languages, early intervention and remedial education. Lumpkin County schools offer an exceedingly strong JROTC program that earns awards at the state level.

At all levels, administrators, teachers and parents are committed to academic excellence. Almost all teachers and administrators in the Lumpkin County School System have earned at least a master’s degree and nearly half have more than 10 years teaching experience.

Lumpkin County parents are encouraged to become involved in the Lumpkin Family Connection Collaborative. This is a dynamic network of school and community leaders and parents who are committed to assisting families in the development of resources that will help their children to succeed. Goals of the collaborative’s current five-year plan include ensuring that all Lumpkin County children are ready to enter kindergarten, that all Lumpkin County children graduate from high school on time, and that all Lumpkin County children are free of abuse and neglect. Some of the programs to help meet these goals include mentoring, underage drinking prevention, and a Challenge Program, a character-building tool that uses ropes courses and team activities to develop decision-making, leader-ship, teamwork and collaboration among students. Lumpkin County Schools also strive to include the entire community in its activities so that its students may enjoy the collaborative support of all. One aspect of this outreach program is the Golden Pass which provides free entry to almost any school-sponsored activity for residents over the age of 65. Lumpkin County seniors enjoy home games of football, baseball, soccer, tennis, track, and softball, as well as drama presentations, band concerts and more. Private Schools

While most Lumpkin County parents are highly satisfied with the public school system, the county and surrounding area also has several excellent private schools that provide an educational environment tailored to a particular religious or secular tradition. Some offer a seamless academic program, from preschool through high school.

 

Colleges, Universities and Technical Institutions

CollegeSeveral world-class colleges, universities and technical institutions are located in and around Lumpkin County: North Georgia College & State University, Gainesville State College and Lanier Technical College.

Lumpkin County’s proximity to Atlanta also gives residents convenient access to the Georgia Institute of Technology, Southern Polytechnic State University, Emory University, Oglethorpe University and Georgia State University’s main campus in downtown Atlanta, as well as smaller community and private colleges and specialized schools.

North Georgia College & State University

North Georgia College & State University is the region’s only four-year state institution and one of only six senior military colleges in the United States. Because of these distinctions, North Georgia is designated as The Military College of Georgia and as a state leadership institution for civilian and military students.

Through its liberal arts education and superior leadership experiences, North Georgia is preparing its more than 5,000 students for success in a global community. The university offers more than 50 majors; numerous pre-professional, professional and master’s degree programs; and continuing education opportunities. North Georgia’s 120-acre main campus, nestled in a beautiful mountain setting, is readily recognized by the gold-covered steeple of its administration building, Price Memorial Hall. Recent additions to the campus include a new Library Technology Center and Student Recreation Center.

Gainesville State College

Gainesville State College, a non-residential unit of the University System of Georgia, is located six miles southwest of downtown Gainesville in Oakwood, easily accessible from I-985 via Exit 16 (Highway 53).

With an enrollment that now approaches 8,000, Gainesville State College offers courses leading to the Bachelors of Applied Science in Environment and Spatial Analysis, Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education for Grades P-5 (teaching certification), Bachelor of Science with a Major in Early ChDiplomaildhood Care and Education (non-teaching certification), Bachelor of Applied Science with a Major in Technology Management, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees, in addition to certificate programs in information technology, geographic information systems and personal fitness training. Ninety percent of Gainesville State
College students are in programs transferable to four-year colleges and universities.

Gainesville State College students can enjoy the “total college experience” by participating in student activities such as: intramurals, clubs and organizations, bands, chorus, publications, cultural affairs programs, fine arts offerings including theatre, extended orientation, and international-intercultural studies programs.

With more than 85 percent of the College’s alumni living and working in Northeast Georgia, the College is truly an integral part of the community and the community has continually provided generous support for the College’s programs.

Lanier Technical College

The mission of Lanier Technical College, a dynamic and growing two-year technical college, is to meet the changing educational and technological workforce development needs of the community by providing innovative and comprehensive adult education and training. The college serves to minimize barriers to educational opportunities and improve the intellectual and technical skills of area residents. By providing adult literacy training, general academic and technical education, customized business and industrial training, economic development services and continuing education services, students and trainees are well prepared for rewarding employment.

Programs offered include automotive, welding, plumbing, and electrical construction programs that are unique to this service delivery area. Educational training programs in more than two dozen high demand and fast growing fields are available.

Southern Catholic College

Opened in 2005, Southern Catholic College is a co-educational liberal arts college and is the first and only Catholic college in Georgia. In addition to the strong liberal arts core curriculum, the college offers majors in business, English, history, integrated sciences, philosophy, psychology, and sacred theology. Students enjoy a caring community that offers a variety of club activities and intramural sports. The 100+ acre campus overlooking Spring Lake is surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and provides a setting of serenity and beauty.

Chestatee Regional Library System

The Chestatee Regional Library System includes branches in Dahlonega and in Dawsonville in Dawson County. The system offers access to GALILEO, Georgia’s online educational databases, public computer stations with Internet access, meeting rooms, and an extensive collection of books, magazines, music and other resource materials.

The Chestatee Regional Library System is a member of PINES, a statewide consortium of 275 libraries in 140 Georgia counties. PINES cardholders have access to a shared collection of 9.6 million books, tapes, CDs and videos that can be delivered to their home library free of charge.
