Dear Friends:

I have recorded an address to update you on the issues of the week. To watch this week’s address, click here.

Please excuse the grainy quality of the film. This is a work in progress.

Financial Reform Bill

This week, the Senate continued debate on the financial regulatory reform legislation.

We need to crack down on the greed on Wall Street that led to our economic downturn. However, the bill currently being debated in the Senate has numerous unintended consequences, and will harm American businesses at a time when the American public can least afford it. Several senators, including myself, introduced amendments to improve various aspects of the bill, but many were voted down.

I offered a commonsense amendment this week that would have addressed the issues that led to the financial meltdown without putting community banks in the same category as the big Wall Street banks.

I’m not particularly pleased with the direction in which the bill is headed, and I’m disappointed that it does nothing to address the issues related to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

I’ve heard many concerns from the banking community in Georgia, and I will continue to take its concerns into consideration as the Senate continues debate on this bill.

This week, I gave several floor speeches on my position on this bill. To watch them, click here and here.

Camp Sunshine

Last week, a group of kids from Camp Sunshine came to visit my Washington office. These kids have been through incredible challenges and I’m always impressed by their strength and spirit. For the past several years, I have had the pleasure of hosting them when they come to visit and to show them around the Capitol.

Camp Sunshine is a program that offers children with cancer a strong support group and the opportunity to participate in activities that promote normal childhood development as they cope with the challenges of cancer. As a cancer survivor myself, I understand how difficult it can be to participate in normal activities. Julianne and I are very fond of this group.
