Business Growth Priorities and Position Statements

The Dahlonega-Lumpkin Chamber and Visitors Bureau has heard from our members and our Board of Directors continues to focus on local, state and federal policies that impact our business community and recognizes the importance of our elected partners in supporting critical workforce initiatives, transportation and infrastructure, and policies that allow businesses to innovate and create jobs.

The Historical and Current Business Growth Priorities focus on the following issues:

Infrastructure and Transportation

The Chamber supports transportation projects and policies that recognize infrastructure as a critical public asset that benefits all businesses. The nation’s airports, bridges, highways, railways, inland waterways and ports lie at the core of our region’s industrial, economic, and commercial strengths.

Support of pedestrian travel is consistent with the future of our community. Producing the largest cycling ride in the Southeast, the Six Gap Century, the Chamber will collaborate, partner, support and promote safety through "sharing our roads" initiatives, education and development of infrastructure.

Education and Workforce Development

The Chamber supports adequately funded education and workforce policies, from birth to career, that prepare employees to enter and effectively advance in our labor market. Businesses depend on a qualified workforce with 21st century skills needed to successfully compete.

Taxes and Regulations

The Chamber will support tax policies that stimulate growth, innovation, and job creation and will support regulations that provide businesses with certainty and flexibility. Low tax rates, fair tax policies, and right-sized, reliable regulations allow businesses to invest in jobs and grow our economy.

Our Chamber serves as the Destination Marketing Organization for this community. In this role, our Chamber "imports tax payers" through attracting visitors to this community and has supported the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), knowing that a large amount of revenue is generated for our local economy by the tourist though our healthy Tourism Industry.

Economic Development

The Chamber supports an agenda that promotes innovation and competitiveness and allows Lumpkin County and the North Georgia region to prepare for growth and success in the worldwide economy. Programs that provide access to capital facilitate job growth, business expansion, and economic stability through intergovernmental and public/private sector collaboration are vital to economic growth. The Chamber is dedicated to collaborating and partnering with our local economic development authorities. Recognizing the impact of the Tourism Industry on our local economy, the Chamber is mindful of growth and policies that preserve our natural beauty and historic preservation efforts.

The Chamber will focus on specific industries relative to the Tourism Industry that will advance the welfare of our community: lodging and accommodations, group market and conference meeting facilities, the wine industry, the wedding industry, historic preservation and new product development, protection of the environment for safe utilization of outdoor assets for activities, and AgriTourism.

Lumpkin County is home to outstanding Military and Leadership Training through the University of North Georgia's Corps of Cadets and the US Army's Camp Frank D. Merrill, which is an important contributor to both the nation’s defense and the region’s economy. The Chamber works in concert with public officials at all levels to maintain Camp Frank D. Merrill, a national asset, in support of the people and systems of the 5th Ranger Training Battalion.  The Chamber also supports the University of North Georgia's commitment to producing outstanding cadets and students committed to principles of integrity, honor and the advancement of both our U.S. military and local military community.

The Chamber will support health care policies that provide greater access and awareness to the community for existing health resources and to recruit and attract health care providers to Lumpkin County. The Chamber will provide a platform and resources to educate local businesses on key health care issues, build a more cohesive health care community, maximize awareness of health care resources and encourage the use of local healthcare services. The Chamber will engage in discussion and action related to healthcare issues affecting businesses and serve as a forum for promoting awareness of available healthcare resources for Lumpkin County residents.

Voter Rights and Education

The Chamber has taken the position on local voter agenda items to support the “right of our citizens to vote”. When the state empowers our local communities to make decisions on specific legislative issues, the Chamber encourages our local elected officials to give each citizen the right to vote to determine the best course for our city and county.

The Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce is a non-partisan organization. The Chamber does not endorse candidates or take positions based on partisan perspectives. The Chamber provides forums and opportunities for voter education and encourages our citizens to vote.
