Transportation Voter Referendum

tsplostvoteWe may not get another chance to say “yes” to create jobs and improve our transportation network. Vote YES on July 31, 2012.

The Transportation Investment Act allows voters in the Georgia Mountains region to provide funding for transportation projects over a 10-year period through a one percent sales tax.

The Georgia Mountains region includes Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties.

All money raised in the region will stay in the region.

Key Points

  • The project list was developed by local elected officials, will be voted on by the public, and will be supervised by a Citizens Review Panel.
  • 75% of all funds raised in the region will be spent on regional projects and 25% of all funds raised in the region will be returned directly to local jurisdictions.
  • Lumpkin County's share over the next 10 years is estimated to be $68.5 million for widening of SR 60, improvements on Morrison Moore Parkway, and several roadway repairs. These upgrades are critically needed and will enhance business and quality of life.
  • There is no “Plan B” as the money will not come into fruition from any other mechanism.

Historic Diving Bell Project Donation Form

owensThe purpose of preserving, protecting and displaying the Chestatee River Diving Bell is to assure that this valuable piece of gold mining history is not lost. The Chestatee River Diving Bell has received international recognition as the only known surviving diving bell from this era, and the earliest surviving example of sub-marine technology. The diving bell was designed as a vehicle to hold men in dry safety under water on the Chestatee River bed for the purpose of mining gold. All who donate $500 or more will be acknowledged on a plaque at the Diving Bell display. A pavilion will be built in Hancock Park in 2012 to showcase the 1875 Chestatee River Diving Bell.
